Intl. College of Engg. Students visit Al Hassan Switchgear Ghala Factory (23 Dec. 2009)

As a part of Al Hassan Group’s Corporate Social responsibility, one of the key commitments is to have a better industry-academic interaction so as to bridge the gap between the theory and the practices in Industry. The Management Development Center (MDC) under the banner of HR Department works closely with premier Higher Education institutions so as to bring the students at par with the industry requirements in terms of building Knowledge, skill and aptitude.

In this regard, around 80 students along with faculty from the International College of Engg. & Management (ICEM), (formerly Fire and Safety Engineering College) paid a visit to the Ghala factory of Al Hassan Switchgear Manufacturing Company LLC (AHSG) recently.

Al Hassan manufactures MV & LV Switchgears, Control & Relay Panels and Light Fittings at Muscat and Buraimi. It is by far the leader in Switchgear Business having the highest market share in Oman with a large part of its production exported to Arab Gulf Co-operation Council (AGCC) countries. Al Hassan manufacturing facilities conform to the highest quality standards (ISO 9001 : 2000 compliant) and its products are certified by leading international testing authorities KEMA, ASTA & UL.

Prof. Nadal Siddiqui, Faculty, ICEM, said that the visit came as a result of Al Hassan’s proactive approach and the College’s continuous search for new fields of educational exploration for trainees. “We believe that AHSG is one of the few full fledged manufacturers in the GCC with capabilities ranging from product design, system design to type tests and dispatch all under one roof. The visit offers an excellent opportunity for our students to learn about the practical aspects of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in a modern manufacturing set up."

Welcoming the students, Eng. Talal Al Assaad, CEO – Manufacturing & Trading, Al Hassan Group of Companies, emphasized that with 45% of Oman’s population below 15 years, Al Hassan Group wants to increase its Omanisation percentage in coming years. He shared case studies of several Omani employees who have risen through the ranks to take up senior positions in AHSG. Later, Mr. Joseph Chandru, GM – Manufacturing, gave a presentation on the Switchgear Factory.

During the visit, the students were provided with extensive information on various processes in the switchgear manufacturing through a presentation as well as physical demonstration. The students also saw in action use of the latest microprocessor controlled test equipment with multiple data capture features which is used for calibration and quality assurance aspects of switchgear. The students were quite amazed to see the state of preparedness of AHSG in terms of taking care of the people, precious resources, and the environment.

In the end, Mr. Sanjay Khandagle, Manager –Talent Management, Al Hassan Group of companies conducted an interactive session with students and took note of various suggestions put forth by the students.

All the students as well as their faculty expressed happiness with the information and knowledge they gained during their visit. Dr Siddiqui, Coordinator of the industrial visit commented that he valued Al Hassan’s cooperation in making this visit a success. He expressed gratitude towards Al Hassan Group’s desire to strengthen ties with different educational establishments in the Sultanate.
