Nizwa University Engineering Students visit Al Hassan Switchgear for orientation (16 Dec 08)

As a part of Al Hassan Group’s commitment to a better industry-academic interaction, a group of students and faculty from the Electrical Engineering Department of College of Engineering and Architecture, University of Nizwa paid a visit to the factory of Al Hassan Switchgear Manufacturing Company LLC (AHSG) at Ghala recently for an orientation.

AHSG is a manufacturer of complete range of Low Voltage and Medium Voltage Switchgear and Control and Relay panels up to 220 kV. The manufacturing facility is spread over an area of 16000 m2 in Muscat. Al Hassan has the capability to design and produce Low and Medium Voltage Panels conforming to the exact requirements of the clients. AHSG is a leader in Switchgear industry in Oman with 65% market share in Oman. 60% of its production gets exported to AGCC markets.

Prof. Dr. Waleed Abdulmalik Thanoon, Dean, College of Engineering   Architecture said that the visit came as a result of the University's continuous search for new fields of educational exploration for trainees. "We believe that AHSG is one of the few full fledged manufacturers in the GCC with capabilities ranging from product design, system design to type tests and dispatch all under one roof. The visit offers an excellent opportunity for our students to learn about the different aspects of modern manufacturing techniques."

Commenting on the visit, Mr Narayanan Sudarsan, General Manager – Al Hassan Switchgear said that Al Hassan provided information about the practical side of engineering and exposed the students to actual engineering practice and enabled the students to understand the working environment in a manufacturing industry. He further emphasized such interaction will build a vital bridge between industry and institution which is currently missing in Oman.

During the visit, the students were provided with extensive information on various processes in the switchgear manufacturing through a presentation as well as physical demonstration. The students also saw in action use of the latest microprocessor controlled test equipment with multiple data capture features which is used for calibration and quality assurance aspects of switchgear.

All the students as well as their faculty expressed happiness with the information and knowledge they gained during their visit. Dr Swaroop, Asstt. Professor and Coordinator of the industrial visit commented that he valued Al Hassan’s cooperation in making this visit a success. He expressed gratitude towards Al Hassan Group’s desire to strengthen ties with different educational establishments in the Sultanate.
