Al Hassan Engineering celebrates award of key PDO contract (15 Mar 09)

MUSCAT - Al Hassan Engineering Co SAOG (AHEC) hosted a reception recently to celebrate the award of the prestigious Burhan West & Harmal Pipeline project by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). Dr Mohammed bin Hamed al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas, was the Chief Guest at the event held at the Grand Hyatt Muscat.

The multi-million dollar contract, involving the construction of DSS flowlines and pipelines at Burhan West and Harmal along with associated electrical distribution, control, monitoring and protection infrastructure, marks a high point in AHEC’s growing stature as a leading Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) firm in the Sultanate.

Speaking at the ceremony, Al Hassan Group’s Chairman, Hassan bin Ali Salman, said the company’s leading position as an EPC contractor in the Sultanate was anchored in "the quality and breadth of our technical expertise". "Our employees put our growth strategy into practice, winning projects and earning the confidence of our clients. The calibre of their expertise and the quality of their work are the foundation of Al Hassan’s success and we are proud to work with such a dedicated team. We care about the well being of our employees and of the communities and environments we work in. We have surpassed our own HSE benchmarks year after year and are committed to the goal of 'zero' accidents," Hassan said. Over the past decades, Al Hassan has blossomed into a $200 million business group, the Chairman said.

Peter Hall, CEO of AHEC traced the company's remarkable growth from a small construction office in 1982 to a full-fledged EPC contractor with a 4,500-strong workforce. "Over our period of existence, we have either completed or in the process of completing almost 100 contracts with leading Omani organisations in the key industrial areas of oil and gas, petrochemicals, power and water. We have built up an enviable reputation of safely providing high quality project solutions on time and to budget."

Peter described 2008 as a particularly good year for AHEC, which achieved a turnover growth of nearly 30 per cent over 2007 and a strong order intake during the year. Among the many contracts bagged by the company in 2008 was an EPC contract from PDO for its Full Field Water Injection Project at Nimr C. AHEC is close to the midway point in the implementation of the contract – a milestone achieved without a single Lost Time Injury. For Korea’s GS Engineering, the company is in the closing stages of completing two major civil, mechanical and pipework contracts – one on the Sohar Aromatics plant and the second on the Salalah Methanol project.

Equally commendable has been AHEC’s role in the development of the power sector. “AHEC has an extraordinary record in the field of power generation, having installed approximately 40 per cent of the generating capacity of Oman. We are currently in the closing stages of completing what will be the largest power plant in Oman. Working with the French manufacturer Alstom, the 1000 MW Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Power Plant for Sohar Aluminium will be fully commissioned in the coming months.

During 2008, we also completed our work on the installation of the largest power plants on the PDO system at Mukhaizna (250MW) and Qarn Alam (125MW)," Hall said. AHEC is currently executing the job of Once-Through HRSG Contract for Gulf Steam Generators – a subsidiary of NeM Netherlands, a leader in the field of steam generation. This is a first-of-a-kind job and will be a pioneer for steam injection projects in the region. Another project involving steam generating equipment is the Cogeneration Plant being executed for Hirbodan-HICO FZE at ORPC's Mina Al Fahal Refinery which includes two HRSGs and one auxiliary boiler. A major related achievement was the award of certificates of authorization from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for the use of the 'S' and 'U' stamps the manufacture and Assembly of Power Boilers and Pressure Vessels respectively in its production facilities.

In the water sector, AHEC is undertaking the civil works contract for the Seeb wastewater treatment plant as a subcontractor for Korea’s Hyundai Rotem.

More recently, the company celebrated its maiden foray outside of Oman by securing an order from Siemens to undertake the civil works associated with a new 400/132KV substation in Dubai. "This contract was clearly secured on the basis of our significant reference list for building electrical transmission and distribution network infrastructure here in Oman," Peter stated.
